This residential property is designed to use very little energy and is being constructed on the shores of Hollingworth Lake, near Rochdale. A combination of solar orientation, ground source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels combined with excellent insulation standards and careful use of thermal mass will significantly reduce the energy consumption of this luxury property. The design takes advantage of the sloping site by positioning the mainentrance at mid level. The protruding double garage frames an inviting courtyard, which leads to a double-height glazed entrance lobby. The external materials have been selected to complement each other and engineer a nautical flavour. The most distinctive feature is the Norden House angular zinc-clamono pitch roof which is supported by slender timber columns and extends beyond the double height south facing glazed faade to provide solar shading to prevent internal over heating in summer months.
The overall project comprises the provision of a new dining hall and community rooms at Aspinall Primary School in Gorton. To ensure that this project was delivered within a very tight deadline and ready for use when the new term starts in September 2011 we have recommended the use of Insulating Concrete Formwork, a Modern Method of Construction that provides a fast track construction, higher building performance standards and lower maintenance along with two built in layers of foam insulation giving superior energy performance that translates into lower energy bills.
During our time on site we have also worked with the school to ensure the safety of the parents, staff and pupils whilst working along side the school buildings they are occupying. We are also working on some projects with the pupils to involve them with the construction whilst we are on site including health and safety talks and careers work with Year 5 and 6.
The overall project comprises the provision of a new extension to create two new classrooms to the school and the remodeling of existing rooms into larger classrooms with wet areas, along with the opening up of the hall into an open plan space.
Whilst working on site at the school we have also visited the children to talk to them about health and safety and the dangers of construction sites. We also spent some time with the older year groups to discuss career options within the construction industry, giving them some aims and aspirations for their future careers.
In recent years we have completed several projects for Stockport High School including DDA works— installing ramps, handrails and disabled parking externally. Internally we have fitted a lift for disabled access, remodeled classrooms and completed remodeling works to the reception area.
"I can confirm that I have worked with PLP Construction since 2008, during which time they have carried out two major projects and a variety of repairs and maintenance efficiently and effectively. They have a professional team who never fail to deliver on time and takes care of all aspects including health and safety. Our business relationship with them has been very smooth, easy and satisfactory. I can confidently recommend PLP as a solid and reliable company and experts in their field. It is due to their efficient service that we have appointed PLP Construction for another school project."
The overall project comprises the construction of new changing facilities and the remodeling of changing facilities to create changing rooms, store rooms and classrooms. The works were completed whilst students and staff were using the surrounding facilities at Canon Slade so the health and safety of both PLP staff, the public and school staff and students was paramount. Through close collaboration and the careful planning of deliveries of materials to site and close Supervision of the Sub-contracted works we ensured the safe completion of all the works which were delivered on budget and on target to meet the agreed completion date. We have collaborated with the school on a Careers Evening at Canon Slade and as a result have had a student complete a work placement with a Bricklayer whilst we are working on site. We have also sponsored the Year 11 Football kit.
"Well managed and effectively delivered to date with an excellent recognition of the schools needs. A clear understanding of the issues and impacts that such works have on a school. An excellent relationship with the school including additional input into whole school life and pupil career development"
The overall project comprised the provision of new Caf Pod and external works including tensial fabric canopies at Bury College. The works were being completed whilst students and staff were using the surrounding facilities at Bury College so the health and safety of both PLP staff, the public and Bury College staff is paramount. Through close collaboration with all Stakeholders, the careful planning of deliveries of materials to site and close Supervision of the Subcontracted works we ensured the safe completion of all the works which were on budget and on target to meet the agreed completion date. All managers, sub-contractors and suppliers on this contract are from the local area and have a successful history of working with PLP Construction.
"Good company to work with. The work was finished on time. The site was well supervised and operatives worked hard. I would be happy to use PLP again. Eva Ainscough, Business manager, Bury College"
This project comprised of building 8 semi detached houses: six 2 storey 3 bedroom properties and two 3 storey 3 bedroom properties. These houses have been built to Sustainable Homes Code Level 3. As part of the requirements for Sustainable Homes Code Level 3 we worked to Robust Design Detail EWT-3, Secure By Design and we have also incorporated Lifetime Homes standards into each house.
We have incorporated sustainable construction into the build where possible, for example, a timber frame structure has been incorporated, efficient energy and renewable energy products have been sourced including solar panels in each house, along with products to reduce water consumption. All building materials used have been sourced from responsible sources that include environmentally managed accreditation schemes.
Local labour and a local supply chain has been used to reduce our carbon footprint and to sustain the local community. We have also worked with the local primary school on a Sustainable Homes project, incorporating site visits for the children. This site was registered with the Considerate Constructors scheme and we have incorporated their recommended best practices into the management of this project. Our site performed Beyond Compliance by scoring 4 or more in each category.
I wouldnt hesitate to recommend PLP for future work. The experience has been really positive, and the project has been completed on time and in the true spirit of partnership working. The project team were found to be very helpful, going that extra mile to engage with the local community and embracing the principles of the Considerate Constructors Scheme. A job well done.
We have worked with Oldham M.B.C. for over twenty years and have built an excellent working relationship with our client. This project consisted of replacing windows, doors, new roofs, pointing and new boundary walls on council owned properties in Oldham. The biggest contribution to the smooth running of this contract was the early identification of the disruption this refurbishment would cause to residents and neighbours. Addressing this at the pre-contract meeting and implementing a plan of tenant liaison to address these issues resulted in the full cooperation of the residents, which meant this contract progressed efficiently and on schedule. All managers, sub-contractors and suppliers used on this project are from the local area and we have received some excellent feedback from householders:
The management and site staff are a real credit to you, nothing is too much trouble for them. Im entirely pleased, thank you.
This project involved the construction of a single storey pavilion with four changing rooms with showers, referees rooms, coaching/education room, plant room, kitchen, office, first aid room, toilets, all complete with electrical and mechanical engineering installations, drainage and external works. This contract ran on time and to cost. Pre-contract analysis and a pre-contract meeting were carried out and ensured our team identified any design issues with the architect and made any amendments necessary to the drawings prior to project commencement, therefore improving the project value and delivery. Effective pre-contract meetings with sub-contractors ensured the integrated delivery of the project. Utilising our effective supply chain management and building on the long term relationships we have with our sub-contractors, helped us to increase value and minimize risk on this contract. All managers, sub-contractors and suppliers on this contract are from the local area and have a successful history of working with PLP Construction.
